Core Lawn Aeration for Healthier, Thicker Grass
If water runs off your lawn instead of soaking in, or your grass looks thin even though you fertilize, compacted soil may be the problem. Core aeration is one of the simplest ways to fix it, and in metro Atlanta's heavy red clay it can make a real difference.
What Is Core Aeration?
Core aeration uses a machine to pull small plugs of soil out of your lawn. It isn't the same as poking holes with spikes. Removing the plugs actually opens up space in the soil.
What Aeration Does for Your Lawn
Relieves Soil Compaction
Foot traffic, kids, pets, and clay soil all pack the ground down over time. Aeration loosens it up.
Gets Water, Air, and Nutrients to the Roots
Once the soil is opened up, rain, irrigation, and fertilizer can reach the root zone instead of sitting on top or running off.
Encourages a Thicker Lawn
With room to grow, roots go deeper and grass fills in, which leaves weeds less room to take hold.
Best for Bermuda and Zoysia Lawns
Aeration is especially helpful for warm-season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia, which spread and recover quickly once the soil is loosened. We aerate Bermuda and zoysia from spring into early summer, once the lawn is about 50% green and actively growing. Have a fescue lawn? Fescue is aerated in the fall as part of our overseeding service, so the new seed has a good place to land.
Is Your Lawn Compacted?
A few signs to watch for:
- Puddles or runoff after rain
- Hard ground that's tough to push a screwdriver into
- Thin or patchy grass in high-traffic areas
- A lawn that doesn't respond well to fertilizer
Aeration Works Best as Part of a Plan
Aeration makes your other lawn care work harder. Paired with our 8-step Turf Care Program, it helps fertilizer and weed treatments reach where they need to go.
Serving Metro Atlanta
From our East Cobb office, we aerate lawns across metro Atlanta, including Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, Dallas, and Cartersville.
Lawn Aeration FAQs
What kind of aeration do you do?
Mechanical core aeration, which removes small plugs of soil rather than just spiking the surface.
When is the best time to aerate?
For Bermuda and zoysia, spring into early summer, once the lawn is about 50% green. Fescue lawns are aerated in the fall, during overseeding.
Why does aeration matter so much around Atlanta?
Red clay soil compacts easily, which keeps water and nutrients from reaching the roots. Aeration helps open it up.
